Hitachi Universal Volume Manager
Santa Clara, California, USA
What it is
Hitachi Universal Volume Manager virtualizes storage devices so different storage system models can be used as one system. Hosts access mapped external volumes through the local storage system in the same way as local volumes. Listed uses include backup, assigning external volumes to hosts, and moving data from an older storage system. External connections use Fibre Channel; iSCSI is also available for VSP One Block. Only block storage is supported as an external system. The guide documents supported systems from other vendors and a generic Fibre Channel profile for systems conforming to part of standard SCSI Primary Commands. UVM operations are available through REST API, Storage Advisor Embedded, and CCI, and mapped volumes can work with related Hitachi storage products. On VSP One Block, up to 4,096 external systems can be connected, with as many as eight mapping paths per external volume. Each mapped volume is limited to 256 TB, and data above that size cannot be accessed. A license on the local storage system is required; pricing is on request.
For and against
For
- Hosts use mapped volumes like local volumes
- Supports backup, host allocation, and data migration
- Offers REST API, Storage Advisor Embedded, and CCI
- Supports up to eight mapping paths per volume
Against
- Non-block external storage is unsupported
- Mapped volumes are limited to 256 TB
- Requires a local-system license; pricing is on request
The verdict
Universal Volume Manager presents supported external block storage through a local storage system and supports several documented storage-management workflows. Check compatibility, capacity limits, and licensing requirements before planning a connection.
Who it suits
UVM suits storage teams configuring external storage connections and managing volumes on a local system for host access. It is intended for block-storage workloads and supports hybrid deployment.
