Domibus
What it is
Domibus is open-source software from the European Commission for setting up an eDelivery AS4 Access Point. It allows organisations to exchange documents and data over public or private networks through interoperable nodes. The eDelivery specifications use digital signatures and encryption to protect integrity and confidentiality, and require each message to receive a digitally signed acknowledgement. Domibus is free, with API access and on-premise, self-hosted deployment. Its REST Plugin offers an authenticated interface described with OpenAPI, webhook notifications, and workflows for resending or downloading messages. Default integrations include Web Service, File System, and JMS plugins, with Jakarta EE 8 and 10 variants. The latest security patch listed is version 5.2.1.3, released on 11 September 2026. Domibus 5.2.1 supports Tomcat 10.1, WebLogic 14.1.2, and WildFly 37.0.x, though WildFly is not recommended for new installations. Supported options include MySQL 8 or Oracle 19c and Oracle JDK 21 or Eclipse Temurin 21. Hardware security modules can store private keys.
For and against
For
- Free, open-source sample implementation.
- Supports signed and encrypted message exchange.
- REST interface includes webhooks and message workflows.
- Includes Web Service, File System, and JMS plugins.
- Supports HSMs for private key storage.
Against
- WildFly is not recommended for new installations.
- Domibus 5.1 and earlier plugins are incompatible with 5.2 JEE10.
- Support covers critical security patches and major bugs.
The verdict
Domibus provides a free, self-hosted route to an eDelivery AS4 Access Point, with security specifications and several integration options. Check server, database, Java, and plugin compatibility before choosing a deployment; WildFly is scheduled to lose support after Domibus 5.2.
Who it suits
Domibus suits government entities, private businesses, and software or service providers that need to exchange documents and data through eDelivery. It is intended for teams able to manage a self-hosted, on-premise deployment and its listed runtime requirements.
