Bevy
What it is
Bevy is a free, open-source game engine built in Rust. It is designed for 2D and 3D games, visualizations, user interfaces, and other graphical applications. Its custom Entity Component System represents components as Rust structs and systems as Rust functions. Graphics capabilities include 2D and 3D rendering, a composable render graph, lights, shadows, cameras, meshes, textures, materials, glTF loading, sprite sheets, texture atlases, custom shaders, and render pipelines. Bevy supports skeletal animation, blending, morph targets, and glTF animation imports. Its ECS-driven UI uses flex-box layout. Scenes can be saved, loaded, and hot-reloaded, while current asset hot reloading covers scenes, textures, and meshes. Audio files can be loaded and played as assets. Bevy targets Windows, macOS, Linux, web, iOS, and Android, and is available through crates.io for Rust projects. MIT or Apache 2.0 licensing carries no license fees or sales cuts.
For and against
For
- Free and open source
- Supports Windows, macOS, Linux, web, iOS, Android
- 2D and 3D rendering
- ECS-driven user interface
- MIT or Apache 2.0 licensing
Against
- Still in development
- Documentation may be sparse
- Breaking API changes about every three months
- No visual scripting
The verdict
Bevy combines Rust-based ECS architecture with 2D and 3D graphics, UI, animation, scenes, and audio. Its broad platform support and no-fee licensing are balanced by ongoing development and possible API changes.
Who it suits
Bevy suits Rust developers creating games, visualizations, interfaces, or other graphical applications across desktop, web, and mobile targets. It may also fit users comfortable with a project still in development.
