Apache Storm
What it is
Apache Storm is a free, distributed system for reliably processing unbounded data streams in real time. It supports realtime analytics, online machine learning, continuous computation, distributed RPC and ETL. Developers build multi-stage computations using spouts, bolts and topologies. The project describes Storm as scalable and fault-tolerant, and reports a benchmark above one million tuples per second per node. Integrations include Apache Kafka, HDFS, JDBC databases, JMS and Redis. Local mode supports in-process development; remote mode submits topologies to a cluster. Storm is self-hosted and available under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The current release is 3.1.0, with source and binary distributions, Maven Central availability and an official Docker image. Security options include pluggable Kerberos/SASL authentication and SimpleACLAuthorizer authorization, both disabled by default. TLS supports Thrift RPC and worker-to-worker messaging through mutual TLS. Release files include OpenPGP signatures and SHA-512 checksums.
For and against
For
- Supports realtime analytics, machine learning and ETL.
- Integrates with Kafka, HDFS, JDBC, JMS and Redis.
- Offers local development and remote cluster modes.
- Free under Apache License 2.0.
- Release files include signatures and checksums.
Against
- Authentication and authorization are disabled by default.
- Deployment model is self-hosted.
The verdict
Apache Storm provides a stream-processing framework with multiple integrations and deployment modes. Teams should account for its self-hosted model and configure the listed security options as needed.
Who it suits
Apache Storm is for developers and teams building self-hosted systems that process ongoing data streams. Its local and remote modes support both in-process development and cluster deployment.
