Dataform
What it is
Dataform is a cloud service for developing and coordinating SQL workflows that transform data in BigQuery. Data teams can use it to develop, test, version, and schedule those workflows. Dataform Core extends SQL with dependency handling, data quality assertions, and documentation. In its web environment, teams can build workflows, connect Git repositories, manage continuous integration and deployment, and execute workflows. Connections are available for GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps Services, and Bitbucket. Scheduling and automation options include Dataform workflow configurations, Managed Service for Apache Airflow, Workflows with Cloud Scheduler, and Cloud Build triggers. Dataform Core is open source and can be compiled and run locally with the Dataform CLI, outside Google Cloud. In Google Cloud, compilation runs in a sandbox without internet access and cannot call external APIs. Each repository must be connected to a custom service account. The service is free, though BigQuery queries, Cloud Logging, and other services used to run pipelines may incur charges. Its V8 runtime does not support additional Node.js capabilities or modules; a compilation is limited to 5,000 actions, with up to 50 dependencies per action.

Against
- BigQuery queries and related services may incur charges.
- Google Cloud runtime lacks additional Node.js capabilities and modules.
- Compilations are limited to 5,000 actions.
- Each action can have at most 50 dependencies.
The verdict
Dataform combines SQL workflow development, version control, quality checks, and orchestration for BigQuery. Consider its runtime and compilation limits, along with possible charges for services used to execute pipelines.
