dbt Semantic Layer
Oakland, California, United States
What it is
The dbt Semantic Layer centralizes metric definitions on dbt models so downstream tools and applications can use consistent metrics and joins. Its MetricFlow engine turns semantic model and metric configurations into SQL at query time. Teams express models and metrics in version-controlled YAML with lineage awareness. MetricFlow also rewrites queries to reduce compute and latency, optimizes joins, and caches repeated queries. Access options include GraphQL and JDBC APIs, a Python SDK, the dbt MCP Server, and integrations for BI, notebooks, spreadsheets, embedded analytics, and AI systems. Claude and ChatGPT can connect to governed metrics through the MCP server. Supported data platforms include Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, and Redshift. Defining and querying metrics requires a Starter or Enterprise account; single-tenant accounts also need setup and enablement. Starter costs $100 per user/month and includes 5,000 queried metrics monthly. Enterprise and Enterprise+ each include 20,000 queried metrics monthly, with custom pricing. The free Developer plan does not list the Semantic Layer.
For and against
For
- Metrics are defined in version-controlled YAML
- GraphQL, JDBC, and Python query access
- Integrations span BI, notebooks, and AI systems
- Supported warehouses include Snowflake and BigQuery
Against
- Semantic Layer requires Starter or Enterprise
- Single-tenant accounts need setup and enablement
- Starter includes 5,000 queried metrics monthly
- Enterprise pricing is custom and not listed
The verdict
The Semantic Layer provides a shared metric layer with query APIs and broad downstream integration options. The free Developer tier does not include it, and paid access starts with Starter at $100 per user/month.
Who it suits
It suits data teams that need governed metrics across analytics, embedded applications, or AI use cases. Teams using single-tenant accounts should plan for account-representative enablement.
