AllegroGraph
Lafayette, California, USA
What it is
AllegroGraph is a persistent graph database for storing and querying RDF triples and quads, generic graphs, and vectors. It uses disk-based storage and is designed to scale to billions of quads. SPARQL, RDFS++ reasoning, and Prolog support queries and reasoning; other tools include geospatial and temporal reasoning, social network analysis, and range queries. AllegroGraph can store embedding vectors and integrate with large language models. It is ACID-compliant and lists online backups, point-in-time recovery, replication, and warm standby. Security controls include role-based permissions, repository access controls, security filters, and triple-level controls. LDAP and OAuth/OIDC authentication and TLS client connections are listed; the security overview recommends third-party tools for encryption at rest. Java, Python, Lisp, REST, and browser-based WebView provide client access. The server runs natively on x86-64 Linux, with documented Docker, virtual machine, Windows Subsystem for Linux, and cloud options. AllegroGraph Cloud is a web-based server setup platform. The free edition is free, with no license key or expiration date and a limit of 5,000,000 triples.
For and against
For
- Free edition has no expiration date or license key requirement.
- Supports SPARQL, RDFS++ reasoning, and Prolog.
- Includes replication, online backups, and point-in-time recovery.
- Supports embedding vectors and large language model integration.
Against
- Free edition is limited to 5,000,000 triples.
- Native server support is x86-64 Linux.
- Encryption at rest calls for third-party tools.
The verdict
AllegroGraph combines graph storage and reasoning with recovery features and vector capabilities. The free edition has a defined triple limit, and encryption at rest requires separate tools according to its security overview.
Who it suits
AllegroGraph suits teams building graph-based applications that need querying, reasoning, or vector storage. Its Linux, self-hosted, API, and web options may suit organizations choosing among deployment and client-access approaches.
