worldGen
What it is
worldGen is a free, open-source procedural generator for two-dimensional worlds built from an integer seed. It creates continents, oceans, rivers, forests, swamps, beaches, cliffs, settlements, and roads. Terrain begins with multifractal noise, then simulated raindrops erode it; the climate model includes rain shadows across mountain ranges. Elevation, moisture, and temperature produce thirteen biomes. Reusing a seed reproduces the same world. An interactive viewer supports panning, zooming, tile details, step-by-step generation viewing, and screenshot export. World state can be saved in TOML and exported as a binary .bin blob. Display and generation settings are configurable through config.toml and world/config.go. worldGen is a Go desktop application using Ebiten and requires Go 1.21 or later plus desktop OpenGL support. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows under the MIT license.
For and against
For
- Repeatable worlds from integer seeds
- Thirteen climate-based biomes
- Interactive pan, zoom, and tile details
- Exports screenshots and .bin world blobs
- Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows
Against
- Requires Go 1.21 or later
- Needs desktop OpenGL support
- Some roadmap features remain future work
The verdict
worldGen offers deterministic world creation with varied terrain, climate modeling, and an informative viewer. Its technical requirements and configuration files make it oriented toward desktop users comfortable with development tools.
Who it suits
It suits developers, creators, and hobbyists who want repeatable procedural 2D maps and editable generation settings. Open-source users can inspect or adapt the MIT-licensed project.
