Whistle
What it is
Whistle is a free, open-source proxy for capturing, inspecting, and debugging network traffic. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS, and reverse proxying, and rules can modify requests and responses. Its Network interface filters captured requests in real time, while Composer can replay or edit them. Users can inspect WebSocket and TCP data, pause or ignore transmission, and send custom data. HTTPS decryption requires enabling HTTPS capture and installing Whistle’s root certificate. The desktop edition provides a graphical interface on macOS, Windows, and Linux; a command-line edition is intended for headless Linux servers, Docker containers, embedded systems, and IoT devices. Mobile capture instructions cover iOS and Android devices configured to use the proxy and trust its certificate. Developers can extend Whistle with plugins or integrate it as an NPM module. Its Weinre tool supports webpage debugging on a mobile device from a computer on the same network. Internal requests can use username and password authentication, while proxy request permission control requires a plugin or custom plugin.
For and against
For
- Free and open source
- Supports HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS, and reverse proxying
- Can replay and edit captured requests
- Desktop interface for macOS, Windows, and Linux
- Can be integrated as an NPM module
Against
- HTTPS decryption requires certificate installation
- Proxy request permission control requires a plugin
- Mobile capture requires proxy configuration and certificate trust
The verdict
Whistle combines traffic capture with request editing, replay, and protocol inspection across several platforms. Note the certificate setup for HTTPS capture and the plugin requirement for proxy request permissions.
Who it suits
Whistle suits developers who need to capture, inspect, or modify network traffic across desktop, mobile, or server environments. Its command-line edition is intended for headless systems, and plugins can extend its capabilities.
