Waywallen
What it is
Waywallen is a free dynamic wallpaper manager for Linux desktops. Built-in plugins support image and video wallpapers, and a Wallhaven plugin is listed. Video playback can use Vulkan or VA-API hardware decoding, with software decoding as a fallback. The project began as a Wallpaper Engine plugin for KDE and lists integrations for KDE Plasma, GNOME, Hyprland, Niri, Wayfire, COSMIC, and Sway. Mouse input works across those desktops, while automatic pausing is supported except for Sway. Waywallen supports automatic rotation, multiple monitors, interactive wallpapers, and performance controls. Open Wallpaper Engine plugins add scenes and web wallpapers; install them by downloading a ZIP and adding it through the plugins page. Waywallen can notify users about plugin updates and install them. Third-party plugin code runs in the daemon with the user’s privileges and can access files and the network. On NVIDIA GPUs, web wallpapers require disabling shared_texture_enabled in web renderer settings. Installation options include AppImage binaries, Flatpak, or building from source. The project is MIT licensed, and a Discord community is linked. Release v0.4.4 adds playback-window exclusions, wallpaper flipping and hiding, and optional update checks.
