The review
TiDB Cloud is a fully managed, MySQL-compatible distributed SQL database delivered through cloud web and API interfaces. It fits teams that need one service for scalable transactions and analytics, particularly when horizontal or multi-region deployment matters. Starter is a practical low-cost evaluation tier, but production capacity, support guarantees and several integrations sit behind paid plans.
Overview
Built around PingCAP’s open-source database, TiDB Cloud combines transactional processing, analytical processing and HTAP workloads in a managed deployment. Horizontal scaling, multi-region deployment and geo-partitioning make it suitable for applications that must grow across nodes or regions without adopting a self-hosted database operation. MySQL compatibility helps existing MySQL applications move over; PostgreSQL compatibility is absent, so PostgreSQL-dependent systems are a poor match.
The service is cloud-only and available through web and API access. Starter, Essential, Premium and Dedicated address different capacity and operational requirements, rather than presenting one uniform service level.
Key features
Starter’s on-demand compute scales to zero while idle. That is particularly useful for development, intermittent workloads and prototypes, where paying for continuously provisioned capacity would be wasteful. Starter also puts vector storage and vector search in public preview, making experimentation possible without committing to a higher tier.
Every listed plan supports CSV, Parquet and SQL file imports, giving teams several practical migration and loading paths. Prometheus, Grafana and Datadog integrations appear on Essential, Premium and Dedicated, but are public preview features; organizations that require settled observability integrations should treat that status as a production consideration.
Email-and-password login, standard SSO, organization SSO, private and public endpoints, and console audit logging span all four plans. Customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) are generally available on Dedicated and in private preview on Premium. Support tickets are available for billing and account issues to all users; guaranteed technical response times require paid support plans. Slack and Discord communities, plus the TiDB.AI assistant for routine technical and documentation questions, broaden the support options without replacing those paid guarantees.
Pricing
TiDB Cloud uses a freemium structure. Starter is free, while higher tiers either use custom pricing or publish a starting figure.
| Plan | Price and terms | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| TiDB Cloud Starter | free; billed starts from $0/month | Per organization: 25 GiB row storage, 25 GiB column storage and 250 million RUs monthly. Free quota covers up to the first five instances, with 5 GiB row storage, 5 GiB column storage and 50 million RUs per instance each month. |
| TiDB Cloud Essential | Custom pricing; 100K Request Units | A step beyond Starter for workloads needing paid capacity; published plan information does not provide a fixed price. |
| TiDB Cloud Premium | $1,800 a month; public preview | Offers 99.99% availability, but preview status makes it less suitable for teams requiring a fully established service tier. |
| TiDB Cloud Dedicated | $0.22 a month; starts from $0.22/hr and $1376/month | Dedicated nodes from 4 to 32 vCPU, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure availability, plus PCI-DSS and SOC 2 Type II compliance. |
| TiDB Cloud Premium Preview | $1,800 a month; starts from $1800/month | Provisioned compute with autoscaling for unlimited growth, 99.99% availability with multi-zone protection, CMEK, PrivateLink and VPC Peering. |
| TiDB Cloud Essential Preview | Custom pricing; typical small production is approximately $20/day | Provisioned compute autoscaling up to 100K RUs, point-in-time backup with up to 30-day retention, and encryption in transit and at rest. |
Starter’s quotas are generous for evaluation but finite: storage and RU allowances apply per organization, and only the first five instances receive the free allocation. Essential is the natural move for modest production usage when 100K RUs fits, while Dedicated is the clearer choice for regulated deployments or workloads needing dedicated node sizing. Premium offerings add availability and enterprise networking or key-management capabilities, but their preview labels warrant caution.
Platforms
TiDB Cloud runs in the cloud and is accessed via web and API interfaces. Dedicated deployment is offered on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.
Who it's for
Choose TiDB Cloud when a MySQL-compatible application needs horizontal scale, multi-region deployment, geo-partitioning or a shared platform for transactional and analytical processing. Starter suits prototypes and intermittent environments, especially where scale-to-zero matters. Dedicated is aimed at organizations requiring defined node sizes, major-cloud placement and compliance credentials.
Look elsewhere if PostgreSQL compatibility is essential, if self-hosting is a requirement, or if public-preview integrations and capabilities are unacceptable in production.
Pros and cons
Pros
- MySQL compatibility lowers migration friction for MySQL-based applications.
- Horizontal scaling, multi-region deployment, geo-partitioning and HTAP cover demanding distributed workloads.
- Starter provides 25 GiB each of row and column storage plus 250 million monthly RUs per organization.
- Scale-to-zero compute helps control costs for idle development and irregular workloads.
- Dedicated supports 4–32 vCPU nodes, three major clouds, PCI-DSS and SOC 2 Type II compliance.
Cons
- No PostgreSQL compatibility rules out PostgreSQL-specific stacks.
- Prometheus, Grafana and Datadog integrations are public preview on paid plans.
- Starter’s free allocation is limited to the first five instances and fixed storage and RU quotas.
- Guaranteed technical response times require paid support plans.
- Premium and Essential preview offerings carry preview status alongside their published terms.
Alternatives
- MySQL is the straightforward choice for a conventional MySQL deployment, including self-hosted platforms and a free Community Edition.
- CrateDB suits readers wanting a freemium distributed database with a 2-vCPU, 2-GiB RAM and 8-GiB free shared tier.
- CockroachDB Cloud is worth considering when a paid cloud service with a free plan and usage-metered monthly billing fits better.
- OceanBase Database offers an open-source Community Edition and a freemium path for distributed database users.
- SingleStore Helios provides a free shared workspace for evaluation, development and non-production testing.
- VoltDB provides a free Developer Edition for individual developers and early exploration.
- YDB is the alternative for teams preferring Apache 2.0, community-supported software that can be self-hosted.
- TBase is a free alternative available across desktop, mobile and self-hosted platforms.

Verdict
TiDB Cloud is a strong fit for teams that want managed MySQL-compatible distributed SQL with horizontal and multi-region scaling, plus a credible free starting point. Its main reason to choose it is the combination of transactional and analytical capability in one cloud service. Look elsewhere when PostgreSQL support, self-hosting or production-ready rather than preview integrations is non-negotiable.
