StrictDoc
What it is
StrictDoc is open-source software for technical documentation and requirements management. It stores requirements and documents as plain-text files in Git, using its SDoc format or a Markdown dialect with traceability features. Requirements can be connected to source code, tests and test reports, then followed through a traceability graph. StrictDoc can report source-code coverage by requirement and generate diffs and changelogs between document-tree versions. Teams can edit and review in a browser or use an IDE or command-line workflow. Custom document grammars support project-specific requirement fields, including mandatory fields. Exports include HTML and reStructuredText, which can feed a Sphinx documentation pipeline; PDF export is experimental. ReqIF import and export are also experimental, and may require workflow changes to accommodate differences in field structures and names. A Python API supports extensions and engineering integrations. StrictDoc requires Python 3.10 or newer and can run a local web server or use a Docker installation path. It is licensed under Apache License 2.0 and is identified for agile teams, technical documentation groups, safety- and security-critical work, and university or research projects.
For and against
For
- Stores documentation as plain text that can be versioned with Git.
- Links requirements to code, tests and reports.
- Generates requirement coverage reports and document diffs.
- Offers browser, IDE and command-line workflows.
- Apache License 2.0.
Against
- Requires Python 3.10 or newer.
- PDF export is experimental.
- ReqIF import and export are experimental.
The verdict
StrictDoc connects versioned technical documents to requirements, code and tests, with several ways to edit and deploy it. Teams should account for its Python requirement and experimental PDF and ReqIF support.
Who it suits
StrictDoc may suit engineering teams that need requirements traceability alongside source code, tests and documentation. It also targets technical documentation, safety- and security-critical, university and research projects.
