Steam Audio SDK
What it is
Steam Audio SDK is a toolkit for adding spatial audio to games and VR or AR applications. It renders positional sound binaurally using HRTFs to represent direction in relation to the listener. Environmental simulation can account for sound propagation, occlusion, reflections, and reverb; Ambisonics audio can also be spatialized and rotated with listener orientation. Developers can supply custom HRTFs in AES SOFA format. The SDK can use multicore CPUs and supported GPUs to accelerate environmental simulation and rendering. Integrations are listed for Unity, Unreal Engine, FMOD Studio, Wwise, and the C API. That API is intended for custom game engines, audio middleware, and digital audio workstations, and can be called from languages that use external libraries. Supported runtime systems include Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS, and SteamOS. Integration versions have minimum requirements: Unity 2017.3 or later, Unreal Engine 4.27 or later, FMOD Studio 2.00 or later, and Wwise 2023.1.0 or later. Steam Audio is free to developers, subject to a license agreement, and the project describes its development tools as being in Beta.
For and against
For
- Supports binaural positional audio using HRTFs.
- Models propagation, occlusion, reflections, and reverb.
- Accepts custom HRTFs in AES SOFA format.
- Integrates with Unity, Unreal Engine, FMOD Studio, and Wwise.
Against
- Wwise integration requires Wwise 2023.1.0 or later.
- FMOD integration requires FMOD Studio 2.00 or later.
- Development tools are described as being in Beta.
The verdict
Steam Audio SDK offers spatial rendering and environmental audio features across several game and audio development integrations. Check the integration version requirements and license agreement before choosing it.
Who it suits
It suits developers building games or VR/AR applications who need spatial audio. The C API is aimed at teams working with custom engines, middleware, or digital audio workstations.
