StarRocks
What it is
StarRocks is a free, self-hosted analytical database for real-time analytics, multidimensional OLAP, ad hoc queries, and other high-concurrency workloads. It is designed for sub-second queries at scale. Its columnar, vectorized execution engine uses SIMD instructions, while a cost-based optimizer can reorder joins, rewrite subqueries, reuse common table expressions, and select distributed join strategies. Materialized views can update when base data changes, and queries can be rewritten to use suitable views. StarRocks can query Apache Hive, Iceberg, Hudi, and Delta Lake through external catalogs without moving that data. Listed integrations and tools include Kafka, Flink, Tableau, Power BI, Datadog, JDBC, Airflow, dbt, and Superset. It can run on public or private clouds and on-premises, with manual or Kubernetes deployment options. Shared-data deployments can use object storage including AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, HDFS, and MinIO. It supports SQL, real-time ingestion, row-level security, SSL-encrypted connections, and external authentication integrations. StarRocks is licensed under Apache License 2.0.
For and against
For
- Free under Apache License 2.0.
- Queries several data lake formats through external catalogs.
- Supports manual and Kubernetes deployment.
- Includes row-level security and external authentication integrations.
Against
- Official binary packages support x86 deployments.
- ARM deployment files are prepared using the StarRocks Docker image.
- The project directs questions to GitHub issues and Slack.
The verdict
StarRocks combines a columnar query engine with data lake access and multiple deployment options. Its documented setup distinguishes x86 binary support from ARM deployment through its Docker image.
Who it suits
It suits teams building self-hosted analytical systems for real-time, high-concurrency, or ad hoc SQL workloads. It also fits deployments that need to query data lake sources without migrating the data.
