Apache Hive

What it is

Apache Hive is a distributed data warehouse system for reading, writing, and managing large datasets with SQL. Its Metastore holds central metadata for tables and partitions and serves clients such as Hive, Impala, and Spark. HiveServer2 allows concurrent clients and supports JDBC and ODBC connections. Hive provides full ACID transactions for ORC tables and insert-only transactions for other formats. The project lists S3, Azure Data Lake, and Google Cloud Storage support, as well as Apache Iceberg tables through a StorageHandler. Named integrations include Spark, Presto, and Impala; Apache Ranger supports authorization, while Apache Atlas handles lineage and governance. Security options described by the project include Kerberos, fine-grained access control, and audit logging, with LDAP, PAM, and custom authentication also listed for HiveServer2. A quickstart provides Docker instructions for HiveServer2 and the Metastore. Hive is open source and maintained by Apache Software Foundation volunteers. The project says Hive 3.x reached end of life in October 2024, with no more updates or releases planned for that series.

For and against

For

  • SQL-based management of large datasets.
  • HiveServer2 supports JDBC and ODBC clients.
  • Supports full ACID transactions for ORC tables.
  • Storage options include S3 and Azure Data Lake.
  • Docker quickstart covers HiveServer2 and Metastore.

Against

  • Hive 3.x is end of life.
  • Hive 4.2.x requires JDK 21 at minimum.
  • Production use is commonly on Linux.

The verdict

Apache Hive provides SQL data warehouse capabilities with metadata management, client connectivity, transactions, and integrations. Users should distinguish the end-of-life 3.x series from the project’s current release requirements.

Who it suits

Apache Hive suits teams managing large datasets with SQL and connecting warehouse clients, storage, and related tools. Linux is commonly used in production, while Mac is commonly used for development.
