Spiderpool
What it is
Spiderpool is a free, open-source networking solution for Kubernetes running on bare metal, virtual machines, or public clouds. It provides underlay and RDMA networking through a CRD-based IP address manager. The IPAM supports dual-stack networks, shared or exclusive pools, and static addresses for stateful applications. Spiderpool works with Macvlan, IPvlan, and SR-IOV, and its IPAM can also pair with compatible CNIs including Calico and Weave. Pods may use multiple underlay interfaces or combine underlay and overlay interfaces, with policy routing across them. Documented connectivity functions include Pod-to-host access, conflict detection, gateway checks, and service access through kube-proxy or an eBPF replacement. RDMA support covers RoCE and InfiniBand, with shared or exclusive device assignment. Use cases include storage, middleware, observability, AI training, latency-sensitive workloads, and separate-bandwidth applications. It supports x86-64 and arm64 nodes; SpiderSubnet requires Kubernetes 1.21 or later. The project is Apache 2.0 licensed and identified as a CNCF sandbox project.
For and against
