Antrea

What it is

Antrea provides networking and security for Kubernetes workloads by implementing the Container Network Interface and Kubernetes NetworkPolicy. It uses Open vSwitch for its data plane, including Kubernetes Service load balancing. Depending on infrastructure and use case, clusters can use VXLAN or Geneve overlays, or run without an overlay. Antrea adds policy tiers, rule priorities, cluster-level policies, and Node policies, and can federate clusters with shared networking and security features. Diagnostic tools include packet tracing, policy analysis, and flow inspection through command-line and UI interfaces, with metrics exported to Prometheus. It supports IPsec or WireGuard encryption for pod traffic between Linux nodes, but not Windows nodes. Antrea is free and open source under Apache License 2.0. It requires a Kubernetes cluster and the Open vSwitch kernel module on every node; its overview reports testing with Kubernetes 1.23 or later. Deployment guides cover Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, and Google GKE, with GKE marked Alpha.

The review

Antrea is a free, open-source networking and policy layer for Kubernetes. It is aimed at platform and security teams managing container workloads, especially when one cluster is not enough. The combination of deeper policy structure, multi-cluster networking, and built-in diagnostics is compelling, but node prerequisites and uneven Windows and Azure support narrow its fit.

Overview

Antrea implements the Container Network Interface and Kubernetes NetworkPolicy, using Open vSwitch as the data plane for pod networking and Kubernetes Service load balancing. It can sit in an overlay design or work without an overlay, so it can adapt to the underlying infrastructure instead of forcing one topology. That flexibility is valuable for Kubernetes operators with varied network environments, though it does not remove the operational requirement to install the Open vSwitch kernel module on every node.

The project is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project. Community help is offered through a Kubernetes Slack channel, mailing lists, meetings, and office hours rather than a paid support tier.

Key features

Antrea extends the standard Kubernetes policy model with policy tiers, rule priorities, cluster-level policies, and Node policies. In practice, that gives platform teams clearer ordering and broader scope for security rules than workload-only policies provide. It is a strong fit where policy governance matters; teams seeking only basic pod isolation may find the additional model unnecessary.

Overlay networking supports VXLAN and Geneve, while non-overlay operation is available when the infrastructure permits it. Antrea also supports a wide protocol set, including STT, GRE, IPsec, WireGuard, BGP, and IPFIX, alongside VXLAN and Geneve. The breadth helps accommodate established network designs, but each option adds design and administration decisions.

For multi-cluster estates, federation supplies a unified data plane, multi-cluster Services, and a common security posture. That is a meaningful advantage for operators coordinating clusters rather than treating each as an isolated installation.

Operational visibility is unusually broad for a networking component: CLI and UI tools provide packet tracing, policy analysis, and flow inspection, and metrics can be exported to Prometheus. Documentation also covers Prometheus, Octant, Multus, and Fluentd integrations. Encryption uses IPsec or WireGuard for pod traffic between Linux nodes; Windows-node traffic cannot be encrypted through these mechanisms, which is a material limitation for mixed operating-system clusters.

Deployment guides cover Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, and Google GKE, although GKE is marked Alpha. Azure support is no longer tested from Antrea 2.5 onward, with related issues handled on a best-effort basis. The project has been tested with Kubernetes 1.23 and later.

Pricing

Antrea is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. The Antrea plan costs nothing, with no trial because the software is already free to use. There are no paid seats, quotas, or renewal terms. The trade-off is operational: you provide the Kubernetes cluster, ensure every node has the Open vSwitch kernel module, and rely on community channels for support.

Platforms

Antrea is available through an API and runs in self-hosted Kubernetes environments on Linux and Windows. Linux nodes receive IPsec or WireGuard pod-traffic encryption; Windows nodes do not. The deployment model is hybrid and the control plane is centralized, with policy segmentation and a northbound API. Cloud guides target EKS, AKS, and GKE, with the stated Azure and GKE qualifications.

Who it's for

Choose Antrea if you operate Kubernetes and need policy tiers, ordered rules, cluster-wide or node-specific controls, diagnostics, or federation across clusters. It is particularly suitable for platform groups standardizing networking and security across Linux-heavy environments. It is a weaker choice when Windows-node encryption is mandatory, when Azure needs actively tested support, or when installing and maintaining Open vSwitch on every node is unacceptable.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Expanded policy controls: tiers, priorities, cluster policies, and Node policies provide governance beyond basic Kubernetes NetworkPolicy.
  • Multi-cluster federation: unified networking, multi-cluster Services, and a shared security posture address larger estates.
  • Useful diagnostics: packet tracing, policy analysis, flow inspection, and Prometheus metrics support troubleshooting and monitoring.
  • Topology flexibility: VXLAN, Geneve, or non-overlay operation can match different infrastructure designs.

Cons

  • Node-level prerequisite: Open vSwitch's kernel module must be installed on every Kubernetes node.
  • Windows encryption gap: pod traffic encryption is supported between Linux nodes, not Windows nodes.
  • Qualified cloud support: GKE is Alpha, and Azure support is best effort after Antrea 2.5.
  • Community-led support: assistance comes through project channels rather than a commercial support plan.

Verdict

Antrea is a strong choice for Kubernetes teams that want structured, cluster-aware policy controls, federation, and practical network diagnostics at no software cost. Look elsewhere if Windows traffic encryption, actively tested Azure support, or vendor-backed assistance is a core requirement.
