SkyPilot
What it is
SkyPilot is an open-source AI compute platform for managing Kubernetes, Slurm, virtual machines, on-premises systems, and cloud resources through one interface. It covers development, pre-training, post-training and reinforcement learning, batch inference, sandboxes, and inference endpoints. Scheduling includes priority queueing, GPU sharing, quotas, and intelligent placement across workloads. Proactive and reactive fleet health checks can automatically remediate GPU and NCCL-related faults. Listed integrations include Kubernetes, Slurm, AWS, GCP, Azure, Nebius, CoreWeave, Lambda, RunPod, and other providers. SkyPilot can run standalone or connect to a remote API server for multi-user collaboration. Enterprise capabilities include SSO onboarding, policy enforcement, RBAC, workspaces, a unified compute dashboard, automatic stopping of idle compute, quota management, and cost reporting. BYOC, BYOK, private VPC, and air-gapped deployment options are listed, along with SOC 2 Type II. Documentation says Slurm support remains under active development and SkyServe deployments on Slurm are not yet supported.
For and against
For
- Unifies multiple compute environments
- Priority queues and GPU sharing
- Automatic remediation for GPU faults
- Supports major cloud providers
- Open-source version available
Against
- Slurm support is still under development
- SkyServe on Slurm is unsupported
- Enterprise controls are separate capabilities
- Large-fleet focus may exceed small deployments
The verdict
SkyPilot gives AI teams one control layer for heterogeneous compute, scheduling, health management, and enterprise governance. Its open-source foundation broadens access, but Slurm-related limitations remain documented.
Who it suits
SkyPilot suits AI teams coordinating workloads across cloud, on-premises, Kubernetes, Slurm, and VM infrastructure. Its platform offering targets teams operating large GPU fleets, while the open-source version supports self-managed use.
