TORQUE Resource Manager
What it is
TORQUE Resource Manager is an open-source resource and queue manager for compute clusters, based on the original PBS resource manager. The free project supports Linux and macOS, API use, and self-hosted deployment. TORQUE 4.0 release notes state that it can support clusters with more than 15,000 compute nodes and describe a multithreaded pbs_server intended to improve command response and job throughput. An optional MOM hierarchy can reduce update traffic from compute nodes to pbs_server while allowing administrators to manage network communications. In TORQUE 4.0, component communication moved to TCP/IP, removing UDP and RPP. The trqauthd daemon authorizes client connections to pbs_server and must run as root on client hosts. Linux builds can optionally use control groups and cpusets, and the documentation describes integration with the Moab Workload Manager. Installation involves building from source with configure and make; the instructions also cover RPM and self-extracting package creation. Use, modification, and distribution are subject to the repository's PBS_License.txt terms. The project directs questions and contributions to its [email protected] mailing list.
For and against
For
- Free, open-source project.
- Supports Linux and macOS.
- TORQUE 4.0 supports clusters above 15,000 compute nodes.
- Optional MOM hierarchy can reduce update traffic.
- Documentation describes Moab Workload Manager integration.
Against
- Client authorization daemon must run as root.
- Installation requires building from source.
- TORQUE 4.0 cannot communicate with earlier versions.
- Rolling upgrades are not supported.
The verdict
TORQUE provides cluster resource and queue management with documented support for large clusters and optional Linux controls. Its source-based installation and version compatibility limits are important considerations for administrators planning deployment or upgrades.
Who it suits
TORQUE is for administrators managing compute clusters who need a self-hosted resource and queue manager. It may suit teams comfortable building and installing software from source.
