Skaffold
What it is
Skaffold is a free, open-source project from Google for building, pushing, and deploying applications. It runs client-side and has no on-cluster component. In development mode, it watches source files and can rebuild images, synchronize files, test images, and redeploy when changes occur. Its CLI provides commands to build, test, render, apply, deploy, and clean up application artifacts. Listed features include policy-based image tagging, resource port-forwarding, logging, and file syncing. Builder integrations include Docker, Jib, Bazel, custom builders, Buildpacks, and ko. Deployment options include kubectl, kpt, Helm, Docker, Google Cloud Run, Kustomize, and Render. Cloud Code adds support through Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDE extensions. Skaffold supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, with local Kubernetes and Compose workflows listed. It checks Google servers for updates by default, but that check can be disabled. Anonymized usage data is collected to help prioritize features, with an opt-out. Its gRPC server is not compatible with HTTPS. Issues are directed to the project repository.
For and against
For
- Open-source and free to use
- Watches files and redeploys during development
- Supports multiple image builders
- Offers several deployment integrations
- Works on Linux, macOS, and Windows
Against
- Runs update checks by default
- Collects anonymized usage data unless users opt out
- gRPC server is incompatible with HTTPS
- Issues require filing a repository report
The verdict
Skaffold provides a command-line development loop linking source changes to image builds and deployments. Its broad builder, deployment, and IDE integrations make it adaptable, with stated privacy settings and an HTTPS limitation to consider.
Who it suits
It suits developers who want a client-side workflow for building and deploying applications. Teams using Kubernetes, Compose, supported builders, or supported IDEs may find its integrations useful.
