AWS CodeBuild
What it is
AWS CodeBuild is a cloud-based continuous integration service that runs scripts to compile, test, and package code. It manages build capacity, scaling resources automatically rather than requiring users to provision and maintain build servers. Projects can use prepared environments for Java, Python, Node.js, Ruby, Go, Android, .NET Core for Linux, and Docker, or supply a Docker-based environment. A YAML build specification sets commands for each build phase and other build options. Builds can start from CodeCommit, GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, Bitbucket, Amazon S3, or CodePipeline. CodeBuild also works with Jenkins and CodePipeline; CodeDeploy and Elastic Beanstalk are available in CodePipeline delivery workflows. Artifacts can be stored in S3 or sent to an artifact repository by a build command. IAM access controls and KMS encryption support security, while build status, timing, and commit ID are displayed and metrics and logs go to CloudWatch. A free plan includes monthly usage allowances for selected compute types; paid usage starts at $0.01, with possible additional charges for data transfer and related AWS services.
For and against
For
- Automatically scales build capacity.
- Supports several common build environments.
- Builds can start from multiple source services.
- CloudWatch receives build metrics and logs.
Against
- No free trial is listed.
- EC2 on-demand duration rounds up to a minute.
- Reserved EC2 instances have a 60-minute minimum charge.
- Other AWS services may incur additional charges.
The verdict
CodeBuild combines managed build capacity with configurable environments and integrations for common source and delivery workflows. Review compute billing rules and potential additional AWS charges when estimating usage.
Who it suits
CodeBuild suits teams automating CI/CD pipelines, running existing Jenkins build jobs, or building source hosted on GitHub. It is available through web, API, Linux, and Windows platforms.
