SimpleXTerrain
What it is
SimpleXTerrain is a free, open-source procedural terrain generation addon for Godot 4 .NET using C#. Its node graph editor defines heightmaps, biomes, splatmaps, and scattered instances. Heightmap generators include Perlin, fractal, and Voronoi noise, along with radial shapes, splines, and images. Modifiers provide controls for levels, custom curves, slope masks, hydraulic and thermal erosion, terraces, beaches, ledges, and blur. At runtime, terrain chunks are evaluated asynchronously on .NET background tasks around a moving camera. The addon sends generated heightmaps and control maps into Terrain3D regions. Its documented workflow builds procedural terrain for Godot scenes with a Terrain3D node and a camera or character attached to a terrain streamer. It requires Godot Engine 4.6 or later in its .NET or Mono edition, .NET SDK 8.0 or later, and the Terrain3D plugin. Installation involves copying the addon into a project's addons directory, rebuilding the C# solution, and enabling the plugin in Project Settings. Foliage and object scattering can generate placement data, but the feature is experimental.
For and against
For
- Free and licensed under MIT
- Provides multiple heightmap generators and terrain modifiers
- Evaluates terrain chunks asynchronously
- Streams heightmaps and control maps into Terrain3D regions
Against
- Requires Godot Engine 4.6 or later in .NET or Mono edition
- Requires .NET SDK 8.0 or later and Terrain3D
- Foliage and object scattering is experimental
The verdict
SimpleXTerrain offers a node graph workflow for generating and streaming procedural terrain in Godot. It requires a specific .NET setup, and foliage and object scattering remains experimental.
Who it suits
SimpleXTerrain suits Godot developers building procedural terrain with Terrain3D and C#. Users need the specified Godot, .NET SDK, and Terrain3D requirements.
