Servirtium
What it is
Servirtium is open-source software for recording HTTP conversations made during tests and replaying them offline without contacting the real service. It uses file-based Markdown tapes that can show requests, responses, headers and bodies, allowing teams to share recordings across languages and review changes in Git diffs. A native record-and-replay engine has bindings for Go, Python, Java, .NET, Rust, Ruby, JavaScript and TypeScript, Dart, PHP, Haskell, Elixir, Pharo, Nim, Zig, Lua, Erlang and Gleam. The project is agnostic about test-runner choice and works with unit-test or specification frameworks. Its standalone CLI can serve tapes as live HTTP stubs, lint them, and import or export HTTP Archive files. Converters include Chrome DevTools, Fiddler, Charles, mitmproxy and Postman captures. Redaction and whole-tape normalization address changing IDs and timestamps. Playback requires matching request headers and bodies, with masking options for transient values. It runs through API, Linux, macOS and self-hosted environments.
For and against
For
- Offline playback avoids live service calls
- Readable Markdown tapes support Git review
- Bindings cover many programming languages
- CLI provides HTTP stubs and HAR conversion
- Redaction handles transient values
Against
- Playback fails when headers or bodies differ
- Focused on HTTP test automation
- No hosted SaaS endpoint
The verdict
Servirtium offers a shareable, file-based way to record and replay HTTP interactions across languages. Teams should plan request matching and masking carefully when recorded values change.
Who it suits
It suits teams consuming vendor web APIs and API vendors sharing example scenarios. It is focused on HTTP test automation, not production service virtualization.
