MockServer
What it is
MockServer is free, self-hosted software for simulating and proxying HTTP, HTTPS, and gRPC services in isolated, deterministic tests. It can serve as a mock, proxy, or request-verification tool. Mocks can be generated and traffic checked against OpenAPI or Swagger specifications, and recorded traffic can be imported from browser HAR files or Postman collections. It also supports mocking AsyncAPI brokers such as Kafka, MQTT, and AMQP, along with OAuth2/OIDC providers. For chaos testing, it can introduce latency, error responses, dropped connections, or malformed responses into mocked or proxied traffic. Supported protocols include HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, HTTPS, SOCKS, and experimental HTTP/3; HTTP/3 uses a separate UDP port. Deployment options include Docker, an executable JAR, Helm/Kubernetes, Testcontainers, Homebrew, and a JVM-less binary bundle. Official clients are available for Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, Go, .NET, Rust, and PHP, alongside a CLI and REST API. A web dashboard displays live logs, expectations, and recorded traffic, with Prometheus metrics and OpenTelemetry tracing for shared environments. Control-plane requests can use mutual TLS, JWT, or both, but status and readiness probes remain unauthenticated and reachable.
For and against
For
- Supports OpenAPI and Swagger traffic validation.
- Recorded traffic imports from HAR and Postman.
- Chaos testing can simulate latency and dropped connections.
- Includes dashboard, Prometheus metrics, and OpenTelemetry tracing.
- Clients cover eight listed programming languages.
Against
- HTTP/3 support is experimental and uses a separate UDP port.
- Status and readiness probes bypass authentication and authorization.
- Self-hosted deployment requires running an instance.
The verdict
MockServer combines mock, proxy, verification, and chaos-testing roles with several deployment options. Teams should account for the unauthenticated health probes when configuring access.
Who it suits
MockServer suits developers and test teams that need self-hosted service virtualization, contract testing, or controlled fault injection. Its multiple deployment paths and language clients may help teams working across different environments.
