Selenium
What it is
Selenium is a free suite of tools for automating web browsers, primarily for testing web applications. WebDriver controls browsers locally or remotely through bindings for .NET/C#, Ruby, Java, Python, and JavaScript, and it is a W3C Recommendation. Selenium IDE is a browser add-on that records and replays interactions in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Selenium Grid distributes tests across machines and browser and operating-system combinations, with Standalone, Hub and Node, or Distributed configurations. The downloads page links to Docker and Kubernetes deployment resources. Selenium Manager can discover, download, and cache browser releases and drivers. Documentation covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari, while Grid guidance names GitHub Actions and Jenkins as CI/CD examples. Grid has no authentication by default, so the project advises secure-network placement and restricted external access. Selenium began in 2004 at ThoughtWorks in Chicago. The project states that the latest Opera driver functionality is unsupported.
For and against
For
- WebDriver supports local and remote control
- Bindings cover five programming ecosystems
- IDE records and replays browser actions
- Grid distributes tests across environments
- Manager handles browser drivers
Against
- Grid has no authentication by default
- External Grid exposure can reach infrastructure
- Latest Opera driver functionality unsupported
- Requires secure network configuration
The verdict
Selenium offers code-based browser automation, recorded workflows, and distributed execution. Grid’s default security posture and unsupported Opera functionality require attention during deployment.
Who it suits
It is for developers and test teams automating browser interactions across supported languages and browsers. It also suits organizations running distributed tests through self-hosted Grid deployments.
