Scrivener
Scrivener · Cornwall, UK · founded 2006
What it is
Scrivener is a long-form writing app for macOS, Windows, and iOS, built for projects that can be drafted in sections of any size. Writers can keep research such as PDFs and web pages alongside a draft, and import Word, OpenOffice, plain text, Final Draft, images, PDFs, movies, sound files, and web pages. A project window can show up to four documents at once. Screenwriting tools handle formatting and support printing and Final Draft export; nonfiction features include footnotes, research libraries, and MLA, APA, and other common templates. Writing History shows how much was written each day. Scrivener also includes publishing tools, version history, and offline mode, but not real-time collaboration. It is used by novelists, screenwriters, nonfiction writers, students, academics, lawyers, journalists, translators, and others. A 30-day trial is offered, and there is no recurring payment unless a customer chooses another platform or a major update. Single-platform licenses are listed at $59.99, paid once for macOS or Windows and $23.99, paid once for iOS; the three-platform license is $121.93, paid once.
For and against
For
- Organizes long projects into sections
- Keeps research materials alongside writing
- Displays up to four documents together
- Works offline and includes version history
Against
- No real-time collaboration
- No free plan
- Separate platform licenses may be needed
The verdict
Scrivener brings long-form drafting, research, and specialized writing tools into one project workspace. The lack of real-time collaboration and the separate platform licensing are worth weighing before choosing a license.
Who it suits
Scrivener suits writers working on long projects, including novelists, screenwriters, nonfiction writers, students, and academics. Its research, import, and formatting options also serve several other writing professions.
