What it is
Scratch is a programming platform for creating and sharing interactive stories, games, and animations. Its project-based approach aims to help young people think creatively, reason systematically, and collaborate. Scratch is designed especially for ages 8 to 16, though people of all ages use it. The platform is free, and the Scratch app can also be used offline; projects created in the app offline are not accessible by Scratch. Download information lists Windows 10+, macOS 10.13+, ChromeOS, and Android tablets running Android 6.0+. The platform is also available on the web and on Android, macOS, and Windows. Extensions add programming blocks that connect projects to hardware devices or web services. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. The project says it is used in more than 150 countries and available in more than 40 languages. Optional memberships offer early or exclusive content, members-only tutorials, merchandise, and store discounts: Annual Membership is $35 a year and Lifetime Membership is $150, paid once. Scratch also advises community members to keep personal information private and report content that violates its guidelines.
