Sailfish OS
Tampere, Finland
What it is
Sailfish OS is a Linux-based operating system for smartphones and tablets that can also be adapted for embedded devices. It supports native gesture-based apps built with Qt and can run Android apps through AppSupport, which the maker says has reached Android 13 level. Device policies and extension points can be configured for custom apps, cloud accounts, location providers, VPN solutions, and authentication methods. Its device-management capabilities cover remote setup, settings and policy provisioning, software management, device locking, and multiple users. Security features include on-device encryption, app and core-service sandboxing, a firewall, VPN support, and over-the-air updates. Jolla says the system does not collect or sell personal data and allows users to connect trusted services or use their own cloud. Licensees receive full source-code access to the OS, tooling, and infrastructure. Jolla officially supports downloads for selected devices, while community ports cover nearly a hundred devices. Sailfish OS was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Tampere, Finland. A voluntary subscription is €4.90 a month.
