What it is
OpenWrt is a Linux operating system for embedded devices, often used on wireless routers. Its writable filesystem and optional package management let users customize a device by adding packages; the project lists more than 27,000 packages and services. Configuration is available through an SSH command line or a web interface. Before installation, users can check the Table of Hardware for device support. Hardware capacity is important: OpenWrt lists 8 MB of flash and 64 MB of RAM as bare minimums, and warns against devices at those limits for up-to-date, secure use. The downloads page lists OpenWrt 25.12.5 as the current stable release and says development snapshots are generally untested. The older 24.10 release is due to receive limited security and bug fixes for some time. OpenWrt is free, open-source software with no subscription or licensing fees. The project recommends familiarity with GNU/Linux and basic networking concepts. Support from developers and users may be voluntary and is not guaranteed.
