Rust Playground
What it is
Rust Playground is a free web environment for trying Rust before local installation or when a compiler is unavailable. Its syntax-highlighted editor compiles code in debug or release mode with the stable, beta, or nightly Rust channel. Available crates include the top 100 by all-time downloads, Rust Cookbook crates, and their dependencies, though some candidates may be excluded for Linux or stable-Rust compilation issues or invalid feature selections. Users can run rustfmt and Clippy, inspect LLVM IR, assembly, or Rust MIR, and load or save code through GitHub Gist. Rust documentation and mdbook examples can link code to the Playground for running or editing. Docker containers provide and isolate compilers and tools. Compilation and execution have no outside network access and are limited by memory and total time. Recent code is saved in browser local storage shared across windows. The project uses Apache License 2.0 or MIT. The free plan costs nothing.
For and against
For
- Free web-based Rust environment
- Supports stable, beta, and nightly channels
- Runs rustfmt and Clippy
- Displays LLVM IR, assembly, and MIR
- Shares code through GitHub Gist
Against
- Compilation and execution have time limits
- Memory is limited
- Compiler containers have no network access
- Some crates may be unavailable
The verdict
Rust Playground offers a broad set of Rust experimentation and inspection tools without local installation. Its sandbox limits network, memory, and execution time, so it is intended for bounded examples rather than unrestricted workloads.
Who it suits
Rust Playground suits learners and developers experimenting with Rust without a local compiler. It also helps documentation authors linking runnable examples.
