Rosalind
What it is
Rosalind is a free web learning site that teaches programming and bioinformatics through automatically checked problems. Its tracks include Python Village, Bioinformatics Stronghold, Bioinformatics Armory, Bioinformatics Textbook Track and Algorithmic Heights. Python Village introduces programming basics, while Stronghold includes mass spectrometry, sequence alignment, genome assembly, phylogeny, probability and string algorithms. Learners can write code on their own computers, then upload or paste answers in any programming language. Rosalind checks each submission automatically, although problems impose time limits and an incorrect answer requires a wait before another attempt. The site is aimed at biologists developing programming skills and programmers new to molecular-biology problems. Faculty can create classes, assign exercises, monitor progress, review submissions and use a grade sheet; professors can request a free Faculty account. The Faculty page says plagiarism checking was being implemented, leaving instructors to compare code themselves meanwhile. Rosalind is open to the public and community funded, with support invited through Patreon. It is described as a joint project involving UC San Diego, Saint Petersburg Academic University and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
For and against

- Automatic checking follows each submitted solution
- Accepts code written in any programming language
- Includes beginner-focused Python Village
- Faculty tools cover classes and grade sheets
- Free public and faculty access
Against
- Problems impose time limits
- Incorrect answers require a waiting period
- Plagiarism checks were still being implemented
- The platform is web-only
The verdict
Rosalind combines structured bioinformatics problem tracks with automatic assessment and free faculty tools. Its waiting rules and interim plagiarism process are important considerations for coursework and repeated practice.
Who it suits
