PuMuKIT
What it is
PuMuKIT is a free, open-source video platform for organizations managing large video or audio collections. Organizations can host a complete media site on their own infrastructure and customize its portal. Viewers can browse by series and category, with widgets for related, most-viewed and recently added videos. Publisher tools include drag-and-drop cataloguing, autocomplete, interactive forms and UNESCO science and technology tags. An Opencast integration module presents and catalogues Opencast videos in the portal. The site also describes distribution to YouTube, iTunes U, Moodle and Open edX. Organizations can provide live event channels and keep recordings available for on-demand viewing. Playback supports HTML5 and Flash, and the portal is described as usable on Android, iPhone, iPad and desktop browsers. The downloads page lists PuMuKIT 4.2.4 as the latest stable release and recommends it for production; 4.x is based on Symfony 5 and MongoDB. Community help is available through English- and Spanish-language mailing lists.
For and against
For
- Can be hosted on an organization's own infrastructure.
- Portal supports browsing by series and category.
- Includes an Opencast integration module.
- Supports live channels and on-demand recordings.
Against
- Requires self-hosted deployment.
- Community support is through mailing lists.
- Older 1.x, 2.x and 3.x versions are unsupported.
The verdict
PuMuKIT is oriented toward organizations building and operating their own video portals, rather than individual viewers. Its self-hosted setup and version-support limits should factor into deployment planning.
Who it suits
PuMuKIT suits organizations that want to operate a customizable video portal on their own infrastructure. Its cataloguing and distribution features may be useful for publishers managing collections, live events and on-demand recordings.
