Opencast
What it is
Opencast is a free, open-source video management system for academic institutions, designed for automated recording and distribution at scale. Administrators can schedule recordings and live streams through its interface, while classroom recording can also be triggered depending on the hardware. Opencast Studio captures video in a browser and can be tried without installing the system. Configurable workflows can generate captions, apply branding and thumbnails, and prepare media at selected resolutions and bitrates. The integrated editor supports work across multiple streams, subtitles, and cover thumbnails. Viewing and editing permissions can be set at a fine-grained level, and learning management system connections can provide single sign-on. Opencast uses Paella Player by default; its separate Tobira portal can keep videos online during Opencast maintenance. Listed integrations include several LMS platforms, BigBlueButton, Zoom recording, analytics, transcription, WordPress, and YouTube distribution. Deployment can use one Linux server or multiple distributed Linux servers. Demo instances are available to explore the administration interface and video portal without installation.
