Pravega
Seattle, WA, USA
What it is
Pravega is an open-source storage system for continuous, unbounded data, organized into durable, append-only streams. Streams can scale as ingestion rates change, with automatic tiering to scale-out storage, and can retain information indefinitely for access to current and historical events. Pravega describes exactly-once event delivery and processing with ordering guarantees despite client, server, or network failures. Transactions let a developer write a set of events to a stream atomically. The system is intended for streaming applications, IoT data, and batch or interactive analytics on large data volumes. Connectors are listed for Apache Flink, Spark, Hadoop, Presto, Boomi, and Apache NiFi; supported client languages include Java, Rust, and Python. Pravega can run as a single-process standalone server or in distributed mode using Docker Compose. Standalone clients connect through localhost only. TLS encryption and role-based access control can be configured, but standalone security settings are off by default. Distributed production deployment lists Java 11, a supported long-term storage option, ZooKeeper 3.6.3, and BookKeeper 4.14.1 as prerequisites. The project directs users to its community on Slack for help and GitHub Issues for bug reports.
For and against
For
- Streams can retain data indefinitely.
- Describes exactly-once processing with ordering guarantees.
- Transactions write event sets atomically.
- Offers connectors for several data tools.
- Supports Java, Rust, and Python clients.
Against
- Standalone clients can access only through localhost.
- Standalone security settings are off by default.
- Distributed production deployments have listed prerequisites.
The verdict
Pravega offers durable streams, scaling, retention, and transactional writes for continuous data workloads. Its standalone access restriction and production deployment prerequisites are worth reviewing against the intended setup.
Who it suits
Pravega is suited to developers building streaming or real-time applications, handling IoT data, or running batch and interactive analytics on large data volumes.
