Aiven for Apache Kafka
Helsinki, Finland
What it is
Aiven for Apache Kafka is a managed Kafka service that handles provisioning, patching, backups, security, and high availability. It runs on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, DigitalOcean, OVH, and UpCloud, though available clouds depend on the plan. Tiered storage and diskless topics can keep topic data in cloud object storage, allowing storage and compute to scale separately. The service includes a managed Schema Registry powered by Karapace, Kafka Connect compatibility, a REST proxy, and predictive consumer-lag monitoring. Aiven describes its clusters as self-healing, with automatic node recovery and deployment across availability zones. Connections can use mTLS and/or SASL authentication with ACL authorization, and stored data is encrypted on disk or object storage. The Free plan costs nothing and includes 250 KiB/s throughput, three days of retention, and five topics with two partitions each. Developer costs $35 a month; Professional costs $180 a month. A free 30-day trial is listed for more memory or advanced features.

The review
Overview
Aiven for Apache Kafka is a managed Kafka service for teams that need event streaming without taking on routine cluster operations. Its strongest fit is a team that wants Kafka’s ecosystem with managed security, monitoring, and availability; the tightly capped Free plan is better for a small evaluation than sustained workloads.
Aiven handles provisioning, patching, backups, and security, and offers deployment across AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, DigitalOcean, OVH, and UpCloud, with cloud choices varying by plan. It supports Java, Scala, Python, and Node.js clients, lists 36 connectors, and supports stream processing and both delivery guarantees. For category comparisons, see Message Queue (MQ) Software and Event Streaming Platforms.
Key features
Managed operations and availability
Aiven takes routine provisioning, patching, and backups off the team’s plate. It describes clusters as self-healing, with automatic node recovery and multi-node deployment across availability zones. That can reduce operational burden, but the plan SLAs differ substantially: Developer lists 99%, while Professional lists 99.99%.
Storage, schemas, and monitoring
Tiered storage and Diskless Topics put topic data in cloud object storage, allowing storage and compute to scale independently. This is especially relevant when retained data needs grow faster than processing capacity, though Diskless Topics are reserved for Professional. Managed Schema Registry, powered by Karapace, is included in both paid plans and Free. Predictive consumer-lag monitoring can help teams spot bottlenecks before they become more disruptive.
Connectivity and security
Kafka Connect compatibility and a REST proxy are included with Developer and Professional, while Professional also lists MirrorMaker2 compatibility. Kafka connections can use mTLS and/or SASL authentication with ACL authorization; data at rest is encrypted on disk or object storage. Aiven lists SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, and HIPAA among its compliance offerings, making the security and compliance posture relevant to organizations with formal controls to meet.
Pricing
Aiven uses a freemium model, with paid plans from $35/mo and a free 30-day trial for more memory or advanced features.
| Plan | Price | What it includes and who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Free | free | 250 KiB/s throughput, three-day retention, five topics, and two partitions per topic. Basic support is included. These limits make it suitable for a limited trial or low-volume project, not a growing production stream. |
| Developer | $35 a month, billed $0.04/hour | Up to 1 MB/s throughput, up to three days of retention, and up to 20 topics with a maximum of 100 partitions. Kafka Connect compatibility, Schema Registry, and REST proxy are included, along with a 99% SLA and Basic support. This is the practical step up for modest workloads, but its throughput and retention ceilings remain restrictive for larger or longer-lived streams. |
| Professional | $180 a month, billed $3.84/hour | Unlimited throughput, connections, partitions, and retention, plus Kafka Connect and MirrorMaker2 compatibility, Schema Registry, REST proxy, Diskless Topics, multicloud support, and a 99.99% SLA. Advanced and Premium support are listed. It suits workloads that need fewer capacity constraints, stronger availability commitments, or multicloud options; the higher starting cost is difficult to justify for small deployments. |
The Free plan and Developer both stop at three days of retention, and Free adds strict throughput, topic, and partition caps. Professional removes those stated capacity limits, but costs substantially more. No seat quotas are specified in the plan terms.
Platforms
Aiven lists API, Linux, and web platforms. Its hybrid deployment model and multiple cloud options offer flexibility, although provider availability depends on plan.
Who it's for
Choose Aiven if your team wants managed Apache Kafka, integrated schema and connection tools, and a path from a constrained free evaluation to higher-capacity service. Developer fits modest streams that can live with its throughput and retention ceilings. Professional is better suited to production needs where unlimited listed capacity, multicloud support, and a 99.99% SLA matter. Look elsewhere if you need substantial free-tier capacity or if Professional’s price is out of proportion to your workload.
Pros and cons
- Pro: Managed provisioning, patching, backups, and security reduce the operational work of running Kafka.
- Pro: Schema Registry and REST proxy are included on paid plans, while monitoring and security capabilities support more demanding operations.
- Pro: Professional combines unlimited listed capacity with multicloud support and a 99.99% SLA.
- Con: Free is capped at 250 KiB/s, five topics, two partitions per topic, and three days of retention, limiting its usefulness beyond evaluation or very small workloads.
- Con: Developer still caps throughput at 1 MB/s and retention at three days, so some growing projects may need to move to the $180 a month Professional plan.
Alternatives
- EMQX is another freemium option, with a Serverless plan offering up to 1,000 connections and usage-based charges beyond its monthly free quota.
- HiveMQ MQTT Broker has a Lab plan with 100 connections and 100 msgs/sec, while Launch costs $299 a month.
- Amazon SQS offers a free tier of 1 million requests and standard queues with usage-based pricing, at-least-once delivery, and best-effort ordering.
- Confluent Cloud is another freemium Kafka option; its Basic plan starts at $0/Month and includes serverless managed clusters, autoscaling, and 80+ fully managed connectors.
- Google Cloud Pub/Sub offers a 10 GiB free throughput allowance and pay-as-you-go throughput at $40 a month after that allowance.
- Apache ActiveMQ is a free, open-source alternative under the Apache License 2.0.
- Apache Pulsar is another free option.
- Apache RocketMQ is another free option under the Apache License 2.0.
Verdict
Aiven for Apache Kafka is a strong choice for teams that want managed Kafka with integrated schema, connectivity, security, and a clear upgrade path. The main reason to choose it is the reduction in cluster operations without giving up Kafka’s ecosystem; the main reason to look elsewhere is the sharp gap between the small Free and Developer limits and Professional’s $180 a month starting price.
