PowerfulSeal
What it is
PowerfulSeal is a self-hosted tool for injecting failures into Kubernetes clusters to help identify problems early. Users define full chaos experiments in YAML policies and can run them in autonomous, interactive, or label mode. It supports Kubernetes, OpenStack, AWS, Azure, GCP, and local machines. Autonomous mode supports metric collection through stdout, Prometheus, or Datadog, and its web interface can display logs and the active policy. Policies can specify a one-time run for a CI pipeline or continuous execution. Label mode lets users limit which pods may be killed and set permitted days, times, and probability. PowerfulSeal can run inside Kubernetes and load scenarios from Kubernetes Custom Resources. Local installation uses pip and requires Python 3.7 or newer; Docker images are published for releases. Cloud provider use requires credential configuration, and the tool needs SSH, cloud, and Kubernetes API access. It is free under the Apache-2.0 license and does not require an external database or Spinnaker.
For and against
For
- Supports Kubernetes, cloud providers, and local machines
- YAML policies can configure one-time or continuous runs
- Label mode offers pod, time, and probability controls
- Autonomous metrics support stdout, Prometheus, and Datadog
Against
- Local pip installation requires Python 3.7 or newer
- Requires SSH, cloud, and Kubernetes API access
The verdict
PowerfulSeal provides several ways to define and control chaos experiments, including targeted pod limits and multiple metric collectors. It is a free option, but requires the relevant cluster, cloud, and SSH access to operate.
Who it suits
PowerfulSeal suits teams that need to exercise Kubernetes clusters and other supported environments with configurable failure scenarios. It may also fit CI workflows that need one-time experiments or operators who want scheduled, targeted pod disruption.
