PoWA
What it is
PoWA is a free, self-hosted tool for monitoring and tuning PostgreSQL performance. It gathers statistics from PostgreSQL instances and displays them in charts. Local mode covers one instance, while remote mode collects metrics from multiple instances into a repository server, including read-only standbys. Adding a monitored instance remotely does not require a PostgreSQL restart. The project combines the powa-archivist extension and powa-web interface, with an optional powa-collector daemon for remote deployments. Supported extensions include pg_stat_statements, pg_qualstats, pg_stat_kcache, pg_wait_sampling, and pg_track_settings; pg_stat_statements is required, and the current version targets PostgreSQL 9.4 and newer. HypoPG integration allows hypothetical index testing. PoWA 5 adds views for replication, background writer, checkpointer, SLRU, WAL, newer PostgreSQL I/O statistics, and per-database snapshots. Metrics can be enabled or disabled, and custom extensions added. Documentation notes overhead, disk use, plain-text remote passwords, and HTTPS and access restrictions.
For and against
For
- Free and self-hosted
- Local and multi-instance remote modes
- Supports query and wait statistics
- Hypothetical index testing through HypoPG
- Selectable metrics and custom extensions
Against
- Requires PostgreSQL and pg_stat_statements
- Can add performance overhead and disk usage
- Remote passwords may be stored as plain text
- UI shows queries after two snapshots
The verdict
PoWA offers broad PostgreSQL monitoring with local or repository-based remote deployment. Its extension requirements and documented security and overhead considerations make configuration and administration important.
Who it suits
It suits PostgreSQL administrators who want self-hosted charts, query profiling, wait and lock analysis, and remote monitoring. Users should be comfortable managing PostgreSQL extensions and securing the deployment.
