PolyMC
What it is
PolyMC is a free, open source Minecraft launcher for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It manages multiple accounts, mods, worlds, resource packs, shader packs, and separate game instances. Each instance keeps its own folder for settings and related files, helping users maintain independent configurations. The launcher supports Forge, Fabric, LiteLoader, and Quilt, and its built-in catalog lists modpacks from CurseForge, Technic, FTB, FTB Legacy, and Modrinth. Individual mods can also be installed from CurseForge and Modrinth for the selected loader and game version. PolyMC provides Java runtime management, logs, and a way to stop Minecraft after a crash or freeze. Users can customize the instance window and theme. The project describes the launcher as built with Qt technologies and provides help through issues or Discord. PolyMC costs nothing. The current macOS build is Apple Silicon only; Intel Mac users are directed to a legacy universal build.
For and against
For
- Separate folders for each instance
- Supports four mod loaders
- Built-in catalog from multiple sources
- Manages worlds and shader packs
- Free on three desktop platforms
Against
- Java version selection is manual
- Current macOS build requires Apple Silicon
- No paid tiers are stated
The verdict
PolyMC organizes Minecraft instances, loaders, modpacks, and Java in one free launcher. Manual Java selection and the Apple Silicon limitation on the current macOS build may affect setup choices.
Who it suits
PolyMC suits Minecraft players who maintain separate modded setups across desktop operating systems. It is especially useful for users choosing among several loaders and modpack sources.
