PM4Py
What it is
PM4Py is a Python library for developers who want process-mining algorithms in their own code. It can derive directly-follows graphs, Petri nets, BPMN models, and process trees from event data, and compare observed behavior with process models through replay and alignment-based measures. Its object-centric analysis handles event logs whose events involve multiple object types, such as orders, items, and deliveries. PM4Py imports and exports event logs and supports XES as well as OCEL 1.0 and OCEL 2.0. It can extract machine-learning features for use with pandas and scikit-learn. The library is available for API use and on Linux, macOS, and Windows; the maker recommends pip installation. Graphviz must be installed and configured for visualization. The free Community Version is under AGPL v3: covered work using PM4Py must be published under AGPL when distributed or made available over a network. A commercial license allows closed-source use; its price is available by quote. Commercial evaluation without open-sourcing code is available by requesting an evaluation license.
For and against
For
- Discovers several process-model formats from event data.
- Supports replay and alignment-based conformance measures.
- Handles object-centric event logs.
- Works with pandas and scikit-learn feature workflows.
- Supports XES and OCEL 1.0 and 2.0.
Against
- Graphviz is required for visualization.
- Community-version covered work must be published under AGPL.
- Community version lists no support.
- Commercial pricing is available by quote.
The verdict
PM4Py offers a broad set of process-mining functions for Python workflows, including object-centric analysis and conformance checking. The AGPL terms and Graphviz requirement are important considerations; closed-source commercial use requires a commercial license.
Who it suits
PM4Py suits developers, data scientists, and researchers building process-mining workflows in Python. Teams planning closed-source use should review the commercial licensing option.
