Pants
What it is
Pants is a free build system for codebases of all sizes, focused on Python, Go, Java, Scala, Kotlin, Shell and Docker. It installs, coordinates and runs development tools such as compilers, code generators, dependency resolvers, test runners, linters, formatters, packagers and REPLs. Pants can analyze imports to infer file dependencies, reducing manual declarations. Its engine is written in Rust, and its build rules use typed Python 3. The engine provides concurrency, fine-grained invalidation, hermetic execution, caching and remote execution. Developers can add rules through the plugin API, which uses the same concurrency, caching and remoting semantics as core rules. Built-in support includes Docker, Pex, Protodoc, Thrift, Protobuf, Helm, linting and formatting tools, packaging and coverage. Lockfiles pin transitive dependency versions and expected SHA256 hashes, which Pants checks against downloaded artifacts. It runs on Linux x86_64 or ARM64, macOS 10.15 or newer on Intel or Apple Silicon, and Windows 10 with WSL 2. Installation detects the operating system and architecture, downloads the appropriate binary, validates its fingerprint and installs it into ~/.local/bin. The project offers community help through Slack, mailing lists, GitHub and other channels.
For and against
For
- Infers file dependencies from import statements.
- Provides concurrency, caching and remote execution.
- Plugin rules share core concurrency and caching semantics.
- Lockfiles pin dependency versions and expected hashes.
- Free under the Apache License 2.0.
Against
- Alpine Linux is not currently supported.
- Tight IDE integrations are not yet available.
- Windows support requires WSL 2.
The verdict
Pants combines tool orchestration, dependency inference and execution features for supported codebases at no charge. Check its system requirements and IDE limitations before adopting it.
Who it suits
It suits development teams working in its supported languages that want automated dependency inference, caching or remote execution. Teams using Alpine Linux or expecting close IDE integration should note the listed limitations.
