pacsDisplay
What it is
pacsDisplay is an open-source project for calibrating DICOM grayscale displays and checking display quality on Windows. Its calibration tools measure luminance response and generate DICOM GSDF lookup tables. The iQC program displays interactive quality-control patterns, including TG270-pQC, TG270-sQC, and TG270-ULN. For uniformity checks, uniLum collects luminance measurements and reports deviation from the median and mean luminance deviation. Other tools evaluate ambient lighting and measure luminance and illuminance. Compatible photometers listed by the project include X-Rite i1Display Studio, Pro, and Plus; NEC SpectraSensor Pro; ColorMunki Display; Calibrite Display Pro and Plus HL; and rebranded meters. Version 6A supports external-display measurement in lumResponse and uniLum. The current release supports Windows 10 and 11. The pdQC toolkit can be run from a USB drive or network without installation, while the installer places files in Program Files, the Public Users folder, and the Start Menu without changing the registry or system services. Development began in 1999. The software is distributed under GNU GPL v3.0 and is free.
For and against
For
- Measures luminance response and generates DICOM GSDF LUTs.
- iQC includes interactive quality-control patterns.
- uniLum reports luminance uniformity deviations.
- pdQC can run from USB or a network.
- External-display measurement is supported in version 6A.
Against
- The current release supports Windows 10 and 11 only.
- Compatible photometer use depends on the listed devices.
The verdict
pacsDisplay combines grayscale calibration, quality-control patterns, uniformity measurements, and ambient-light tools. It is free, open source, and limited to Windows 10 and 11 in its current release.
Who it suits
pacsDisplay may suit people responsible for calibrating DICOM grayscale displays or checking display quality in radiology settings. It is for Windows 10 and 11 environments and supports a listed range of photometers.
