PatternSpace
What it is
PatternSpace is a macOS app that generates test patterns for display calibration. It renders SDR and HDR patches, grids, clipping checks, gamma tools, and color swatches across more than 100 GPU-rendered patterns in six categories. A Metal EDR pipeline supports rendering up to 16 bits per channel and patch output synchronized to the display’s refresh cycle. It works with connected internal or external displays and requires macOS 15.6 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel Macs. The free plan includes 14 SDR reference presets and allows up to 25 Remote patches per session. Pro adds calibration automation integrations for ColourSpace Network Server, CalMAN UPGCI, and PGenerator, plus unlimited Remote rendering and LUT or ICC file export. Pro costs $39.99, paid once. A separate DeckLink SDI Output plan costs $39.99, paid once and requires compatible Blackmagic hardware and Desktop Video 16.4.x. PatternSpace supplies patterns but cannot measure or automatically correct a display; accuracy requires measurement hardware.
For and against
For
- More than 100 patterns across six categories
- Supports SDR and HDR patches
- Works with internal and external displays
- Pro includes calibration automation integrations
Against
- Requires macOS 15.6 or later
- Display accuracy requires measurement hardware
- DeckLink SDI excludes library patterns and HDR/UHD SDI
- LUT or ICC export requires Pro
The verdict
PatternSpace offers a broad set of calibration patterns and optional automation integrations for Mac users. It provides test patches rather than measurement or automatic display correction.
Who it suits
It suits display calibrators, reviewers, video engineers, and home theater installers who need pattern output from a Mac. It may also suit users who want to inspect or build LUT chains, with LUT Tools marked beta.
