PackScript
What it is
PackScript is a free, open-source command-line compiler for generating Minecraft datapack files. It uses Python by default, allowing users to write Minecraft commands directly without learning another command syntax, while passing command lines through without interpreting each one. Function definitions can combine files and generate function tags. The `dp` object creates, modifies, or deletes datapack files, including dynamically named files, and `capture_lines()` collects commands into a list. PackScript generates recipes, loot tables, advancements, and predicates. Compilation can produce a directory, ZIP, or JAR; a JAR can apply the pack as a mod and can package a resource pack when an `assets` folder is included. `init --modded` adds configuration for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, requires Python 3.12 or later, and is licensed under MIT. A VS Code syntax highlighter and associated Fabric auto-compilation mod are also available.
For and against
For
- Generates recipes, loot tables, advancements, and predicates
- Outputs directories, ZIP files, or JAR files
- Supports Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge configuration
- Includes VS Code syntax highlighting
- Licensed under the MIT License
Against
- Requires Python 3.12 or later
- FunctionPackScript files cannot use create statements
- Users must install Python before running it
The verdict
PackScript offers a Python-based way to compile Minecraft datapacks into several output formats. Its loader configuration and editor or Fabric integrations broaden the workflow, while the Python requirement and function-file limitation remain relevant.
Who it suits
PackScript suits Minecraft datapack creators comfortable with command-line tools and Python. It is useful for users targeting standard or modded loaders across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
