p2pmux
What it is
p2pmux is a free peer-to-peer terminal multiplexer for connecting people and machines in a shared session. Each pane runs a real shell on the machine of the person who opened it, using that host’s tools and environment. Sessions can contain up to 8 members, 9 tabs, and 8 panes per tab, with shared layouts and nested splits. Streaming is end-to-end encrypted and peer-to-peer, with an iroh relay available when NAT requires it. If the coordinator’s laptop closes, panes on other machines continue running, though layout changes and new joins pause. Processes and credential files stay on their pane host and are not uploaded to peers. An agent inbox lists detected coding agents and can open a pane for terminal input; listed integrations include Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent, Pi, and OpenCode. Anyone with a join code or ticket can see every pane and interact with terminals. Join codes last six hours, and a rendezvous outage can trigger a service-free ticket fallback. p2pmux supports macOS and Linux, but not Windows. Linux builds require glibc 2.35 or newer; musl systems must build from source.
For and against
For
- End-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer terminal streaming.
- Sessions support up to 8 members.
- Pane processes and credentials stay on their host.
- Join-code outage fallback uses service-free tickets.
Against
- Anyone with a join code can control terminals.
- Windows is unsupported.
- Linux requires glibc 2.35 or newer; musl needs source builds.
The verdict
p2pmux shares live terminal panes while keeping each shell and its credentials on its owner’s machine. Shared access is broad, so anyone with a join code or ticket can view and control session terminals.
Who it suits
p2pmux suits people collaborating in terminal sessions across macOS or Linux machines. Its host-based panes and shared layout support teams that want to work in each other’s terminal environments.
