RMUX
What it is
RMUX is a free, open-source terminal multiplexer written in Rust that keeps shells under a local daemon. RMUX 0.10.0 provides a tmux-compatible surface of 90 commands for persistent sessions that can be detached and reattached. Its Rust, Python, and TypeScript SDKs support automation across sessions, windows, and panes, including sending input, waiting for output, capturing structured snapshots, and receiving pane events. The Python and TypeScript SDKs require the RMUX binary to be installed first. Web Share creates browser links to a pane or session while the shell remains on the user's machine. Links can grant operator or read-only spectator access, with separate pairing PINs enabled by default; terminal updates are encrypted and decrypted in the browser. Sharing options include private Tailscale access, public SSH tunnel presets, and user-provided ingress URLs. The Web Share frontend can be self-hosted. Default control uses local IPC, and browser sharing or remote access requires explicitly starting Web Share. RMUX is dual-licensed under MIT and Apache-2.0.
For and against
For
- Persistent sessions support detach and reattach
- Official SDKs for Rust, Python, and TypeScript
- Browser links offer operator or spectator access
- Web Share frontend can be self-hosted
Against
- Python and TypeScript SDKs require the binary
- Browser sharing requires explicitly starting Web Share
- No plugins or extensions
The verdict
RMUX combines persistent local sessions with SDK automation and optional browser sharing. Check the binary requirement for Python and TypeScript SDKs and the explicit setup needed for sharing.
Who it suits
RMUX suits people who want persistent local terminal sessions, SDK-based automation, or browser sharing for a pane or session. Python and TypeScript automation requires the RMUX binary.
