OpenIPAM
What it is
OpenIPAM is a free, open-source tool for managing IP addresses and keeping network and infrastructure inventory. It handles CIDR subnets, address assignments and reservations, duplicate-IP conflict detection, VLANs, IP ranges, and subnet calculations. DHCP tracking covers scopes, leases, reservations, options, and utilization. The inventory supports 14 host types, including hardware lifecycle tracking, locations and racks, maintenance windows, and company records. It can run in a browser using local storage or with an optional Python Flask backend and server-side SQLite for multi-user access. Server mode supports SAML 2.0 single sign-on with Microsoft Entra ID, authenticated routes, and a REST API for entity management, search, dashboard statistics, and JSON backup or import. CSV host import and backup and restore covering DHCP data are supported. The project describes signed session cookies with an eight-hour lifetime and user-attributed audit entries. Browser-mode data stays in the browser; server-mode data is stored in a server-side SQLite file. The browser version can be opened from downloaded files, and the repository includes a Linux setup script for the backend.
For and against
For
- Tracks DHCP scopes, leases, and utilization
- Inventory supports 14 host types
- Browser mode keeps data in the browser
- Server mode includes a REST API and SAML SSO
Against
- Role-based access control is a listed contribution area
- DNS management is a listed contribution area
- Advanced reporting is a listed contribution area
The verdict
OpenIPAM brings address management, DHCP tracking, and infrastructure inventory together, with browser and server modes. Teams needing role-based access control, DNS records, topology views, or advanced reporting should note those listed gaps.
Who it suits
OpenIPAM suits homelabs, small businesses, network engineers, and IT departments managing addresses and asset records. Browser storage offers a local option, while the backend supports multi-user access.
