Monsoon
What it is
Monsoon is a free, open-source, self-hosted platform that combines DHCP service and IP address management in one Go binary. It supports DHCPv4 and DHCPv6, including relay information, prefix delegation, stateless mode, and dynamic DNS updates. IPAM tools cover subnet hierarchies, CIDR work, capacity planning, network discovery, conflict detection, and audit history. An embedded dashboard provides subnet, address, lease, reservation, discovery, audit, and settings views. REST and gRPC APIs, WebSocket events, and an MCP server provide programmatic access. Integrations include Slack and generic JSON webhooks, Prometheus metrics, and import tools for ISC DHCP, Kea, phpIPAM, NetBox, and CSV. Embedded storage uses a B+Tree index, write-ahead logging, snapshots, and crash recovery. Deployment examples use systemd and Docker. The current build supports local authentication only, without LDAP configuration. High availability is limited to basic active-passive heartbeat and lease synchronization for controlled environments. Discovery uses scheduled or manual scans with limited active probe enrichment; passive rogue-DHCP sensing is not implemented.
For and against
For
- Combines DHCP and IPAM
- Supports DHCPv4 and DHCPv6
- Includes subnet planning and audit history
- REST, gRPC, WebSocket, and MCP access
- Apache 2.0 open-source license
Against
- Local authentication only
- LDAP configuration is unsupported
- High availability has limited scope
- Passive rogue-DHCP sensing is unavailable
The verdict
Monsoon brings network addressing, DHCP, discovery, and auditing into one self-hosted system. Its local-authentication requirement and limited HA and discovery scope should guide deployment planning.
Who it suits
Monsoon fits administrators who want self-hosted DHCP and IPAM across Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, or Windows. It is intended for controlled environments rather than multi-tenant SaaS deployments.
