openGemini
What it is
openGemini is a free, open-source distributed database for storing and analyzing time-series data, including metrics, logs, and traces. It is intended for monitoring and observability, IoT, and operations analysis. Its MPP design uses ts-sql, ts-meta, and ts-store components, which can scale independently. Column-based storage, compression, automatic partitioning, and LSM-based techniques are part of its storage approach. For analysis, it supports PromQL and offers HTTP APIs for expressions, metadata, and remote reads and writes; InfluxQL and GeminiQL are also listed query languages. Data ingestion options include InfluxDB Line Protocol, Apache Arrow Flight, and Prometheus remote_write. A built-in AI analysis platform provides real-time anomaly detection, and Grafana can optionally be used with Prometheus remote read and write. openGemini supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as Docker and Kubernetes deployment. Authentication is disabled by default and must be enabled in configuration. PromQL compatibility covers 90% of Prometheus functions and operators, with some unsupported. The project is a CNCF sandbox project.
For and against
For
- Stores metrics, logs, and traces.
- Components can scale independently.
- Supports PromQL, InfluxQL, and GeminiQL.
- Offers Docker and Kubernetes deployment.
- Real-time anomaly detection is included.
Against
- Authentication is disabled by default.
- PromQL compatibility is 90%, with unsupported functions and operators.
- Backup requests have an interface, but no CLI backup command.
- macOS and Windows are recommended for development and debugging.
The verdict
openGemini brings multiple ingestion routes, query options, and distributed scaling to time-series workloads. Review its PromQL gaps and enable authentication in configuration when planning a deployment.
Who it suits
openGemini suits teams analyzing time-series data for monitoring, observability, IoT, or operations. It is relevant to users seeking a self-hosted database with distributed scaling and several query and ingestion options.
