OpenAS2
What it is
OpenAS2 is a Java server implementation of the EDIINT AS2 standard for exchanging messages between trading partners. It handles EDI-X12, EDIFACT, XML, and binary payloads, with support for signing and encryption algorithms. Listed protocol features include AS2 1.1 conformance, HTTPS transport, compression, and synchronous or asynchronous MDNs. It can process files in parallel for partners with high traffic volumes, run as a server daemon, and support remote control, module self-tests, and load balancer health checks. The project provides Docker build and run instructions; its README specifies Java 11 and later. Sample configuration includes sender and receiver modules, message and MDN storage, database tracking, and a directory resender for failed transmissions. H2 is the default tracking database, and the configuration can be changed for other databases. A health-check module is included but disabled by default. The WebUI connects to the REST API, but its package is deprecated, unsupported, and expected to be removed. OpenAS2 is free and licensed under GPLv3.
For and against
For
- Handles EDI-X12, EDIFACT, XML, and binary payloads.
- Supports signing and encryption algorithms.
- Includes Docker deployment instructions.
- Provides configurable modules and REST API access.
Against
- Requires Java 11 or later.
- WebUI package is deprecated and unsupported.
- Health-check module is disabled by default.
The verdict
OpenAS2 provides server-based AS2 messaging with configurable modules and protocol features. Its WebUI is a notable limitation because it is deprecated and unsupported.
Who it suits
It suits IT teams that need a server for AS2 exchanges with trading partners and can work with Java-based deployment. Teams considering the WebUI should account for its deprecated status.
