EdiFabric
What it is
EdiFabric provides developer tools for translating EDI data into structured JSON and back. The tools can parse, validate, generate, acknowledge, split, and map EDI, with support for custom models and templates. Its .NET and Cloud products cover standards including EDIFACT, EANCOM, X12, HIPAA, IAIABC, NCPDP, HL7, VDA, EDIGAS, and IATA; .NET also works with custom flat files. The Cloud offering is a REST API that needs no software installation and can be called by any language able to make REST requests. It can be self-hosted, while the vendor-hosted service processes EDI on its servers and is stated not to be HIPAA or SOC compliant. Native currently supports X12 and HIPAA, and Cloud requests are limited to 3 MB each. The .NET library includes Entity Framework database contexts, and code examples are available on GitHub. Community is free for non-production use; Developer is $179 a year and Enterprise is $799 a year. EdiFabric was founded in 2016.

The review
Overview
EdiFabric is a developer toolkit for translating EDI messages and structured JSON in either direction, with additional tools for validating and mapping data. It suits teams building EDI processing into their own software; it is not a ready-made workflow application for business users. The main choice is between broad .NET and Cloud standards support, a more limited Native library, and a hosted API with a 3 MB request cap.
The .NET library and Cloud API support EDIFACT, EANCOM, X12, HIPAA, IAIABC, NCPDP, HL7, VDA, EDIGAS, and IATA; .NET also handles custom flat files. EdiFabric Limited was founded in 2016 by Kamen Nikolov while he was consulting for the NHS in London. For a broader category comparison, see Electronic Data Interchange Software.
Key features
- EDI processing: The tools can parse, validate, generate, acknowledge, split, and map documents, and translate between EDI and JSON. Custom EDI models or templates allow teams to shape processing around their requirements.
- Several integration paths: The .NET library includes Entity Framework database contexts for EDI data, and GitHub code examples give .NET developers a starting point. The Native library exposes a C interface callable from C, C++, Rust, Go, Python, Node.js, Java, and .NET. It supports only X12 and HIPAA, so teams handling other standards need a different product path.
- Cloud API: The REST API works from any language that can make REST requests and requires no software installation. Hosted Cloud processes EDI data on the vendor’s servers and is not HIPAA or SOC compliant. Customers can instead self-host the Cloud API on their own infrastructure; hosted requests are capped at 3 MB each.
- Document coverage: Supported document types include invoices, purchase orders and responses, despatch advice, acknowledgments, medical claims, cargo reports, passenger lists, price catalogues, and transport status.
Pricing
The freemium model ranges from a no-cost evaluation tier to annual licenses, usage charges, and custom pricing for OEM distribution.
- Community: Free forever, with 250 operations per day, three leased seats, public Cloud EDI models, and EDI forum support. It is limited to non-production use, making it appropriate for learning, evaluation, and prototypes rather than live workloads.
- Cloud only: $0.01 per operation, with the first 1,000 operations each month free. It provides the hosted REST API and private custom EDI models, but no .NET or Native license and no platform or subscription fee. This is a narrow option for teams that only need hosted API access and can work within the data-handling terms and request cap.
- Developer: $179 per year includes 3,000 Cloud operations per month, then $0.01 per operation, plus unlimited local operations, three leased seats, private Cloud models, and standard support. Standard support covers three incidents a year for Developer. Its seat and Cloud quotas suit individual developers and small teams, but larger hosted volumes incur overage charges.
- Enterprise: $799 per year includes 25,000 Cloud operations per month, then $0.008 each; local operations, seats, and owned environments are unlimited. It adds offline mode and standard support, fitting company-wide use where those capacity and deployment terms justify the higher annual price.
- Perpetual: $2,950 once buys Enterprise rights excluding Cloud, with a serial key that never expires. Updates and support last one year; staying current afterward costs $600 per year. It is restricted to legal entities and is best for organizations that want a non-Cloud license and accept ongoing maintenance costs to remain current.
- OEM: $4,500 per year, quoted according to customer count. It requires an Enterprise plan and adds commercial redistribution rights, one derived serial key per end customer, and standard support to the main licensee. It is aimed at companies embedding EdiFabric in products for redistribution, not ordinary internal use.
The Cloud only and Developer tiers share a $0.01 rate beyond their included operations; Enterprise lowers that rate to $0.008. Community’s daily cap and non-production restriction make it a trial and prototyping tier, not a low-cost production substitute.
Platforms
EdiFabric supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployments. The REST API can be used without installing software, while self-hosting lets customers keep Cloud API processing on their own infrastructure. The Native library’s narrower standards coverage is an important trade-off for teams choosing that integration route.
Who it's for
EdiFabric is a strong fit for developers and organizations that need to build EDI translation into existing applications, especially when .NET integration, custom models, or multiple implementation languages matter. Community offers a bounded way to learn and prototype, Developer targets individuals and small teams, and Enterprise adds higher Cloud allowances and unlimited seats and owned environments. It is a poor fit for teams seeking a ready-made business workflow app, or for workloads that require hosted processing to be HIPAA or SOC compliant.
Pros and cons
- Pro: Multiple integration choices, including .NET, a Native C interface, and a REST API, accommodate different application stacks.
- Pro: .NET and Cloud cover a wide range of named EDI standards, while .NET also supports custom flat files.
- Pro: Developer and Enterprise include unlimited local operations, separating local processing from Cloud operation quotas.
- Con: Native supports only X12 and HIPAA, limiting its usefulness for broader standards requirements.
- Con: Hosted Cloud processes EDI on vendor servers and is not HIPAA or SOC compliant; the 3 MB request cap can also rule it out for larger individual requests.
- Con: Community is non-production only, and paid Cloud tiers charge for usage beyond their monthly allowances.
Alternatives
Choose LANSA if its web, Windows, iOS, or Android platform coverage better matches your deployment needs. Stedi is worth considering for a freemium alternative with a free Sandbox, unlimited users, and API and web platforms.
Rocket EDX is another paid option, available for API, Linux, web, and Windows, with variable usage or a fixed-price subscription. Commport Cloud EDI is a paid web option described as suited to businesses of all sizes and low-volume data exchange. SPS Analytics is a paid web platform with a supplier-focused Decision Intelligence plan.
Babelway may suit teams looking for a paid API and web platform with a free trial; its Lite plan is $99 a month for 200 messages per month, 50 MB incoming volume, one environment, and one user. Boomi is another paid option with API, self-hosted, and web platforms and a 30-day free trial. Orderful is a paid API and web option with a Labels Only plan at $99 a month for standalone Labels API access, carton and pallet labels, ERP/WMS integration, and built-in field validation.
Verdict
Choose EdiFabric when your team wants to embed EDI translation in software and needs a choice of .NET, Native, or REST integration, with broad standards coverage through .NET or Cloud. Look elsewhere if you need an end-user workflow product, require hosted HIPAA or SOC-compliant processing, or expect requests larger than Cloud’s 3 MB limit.
